The Café Townson carries its name according to the Scottish doctor, scientist and explorer Robert Townson (1762 - 1827). In 1793 he led the first ascent of the Lomnitzer Point from the Small cold valley (Malá Studená dolina). Skilled for his Time, Townson determined almost the exact height of Lomický Point (2 633m), with the help of barometric height measurement.
